For Linux - The easiest method to add all printers is to simply add the print server to the Cups process.
If you are using Windows and MAC, add the individual printers via add printer dialog.
Please note - you can only access these printers from CENPA subnets
Printer Model | IP | Location | Duplex | Color | Scanner | Plotter | Notes |

Only If you are running Linux and Cups 1.6 or greater, you need to also install cups-browsed
sudo apt-get install cups-browsed
* Edit /etc/cups-browsed.conf and add the following at end of file:
Browsing on
BrowsePoll marie.npl.washington.edu:631
* Restart
sudo /etc/init.d/cups-browsed restart
Generally most desktop distributions already include cups. Skip this step if you already have Cups.
Refer to your specific linux distribution as to how to install packages.
sudo apt-get install cups |
sudo yum install cups |
Connect to Printers directly as browsepoll functionality is no longer supported
For all operating systems, the following instructions apply
Edit /etc/cups/cupsd.conf
sudo vim /etc/cups/cupsd.conf |
ADD to top section:
|
Change Browsing to On
Browsing On |
Save file and exit
Generally the following works:
sudo /etc/init.d/cups restart |
You typically will use the option to add each printer directly using the printer's IP.
However the following method will add a printer from the print server.
In web browser (e.g. Firefox, Safari, Chrome, Internet Explorer) go to the following URL:
http://marie.npl.washington.edu:631/printers/
For the duplex HP 4300 black/white printer: 128.95.100.6
For the Dell 5130CDN color: 128.95.100.8
For each printer you wish to add, complete the following steps. For this example, I will add the HP 4300 located in the electronics room. The screenshots show the dialogs for Windows XP - Vista and 7 will be slightly different.
1. Right-click on the printer link and select 'copy link location'
2. In Windows 'Add printer' dialog, select 'a network printer ...' and click 'next'
3. Paste the copied printer link location in the URL field and click 'next'
4. Select the printer manufacturer and printer model to add driver
Note - these are generally only required when installing printer on Windows OS or Mac.
