If you will be working in the tunnel (with or near the accelerator), in the Hot Lab, or with radioactive sources, you will need radiation safety training. Talk to Gary Holman, the laboratory safety officer, about the requirements.
If you are only working with sealed sources, you can take the one-hour online safety training for sealed sources: http://www.ehs.washington.edu/psotrain/corsdesc.shtm#rsso
If you are working in the tunnel or with sources that have not been encapsulated, you will need the full radiation safety training, comprising about six hours of online material followed by a two-hour in-person question-and-answer session and exam. See http://www.ehs.washington.edu/psotrain/corsdesc.shtm#rsfo.
As with all university safety training, please enter Diana Parno (dparno@uw.edu) as your supervisor, or send her a PDF copy of your training certificate.
Completing the latter course will entitle you to obtain a dosimeter badge. Talk to Doug Will about this process. Your dosimeter must be worn while you are working in radiation areas or while you are working with radioactive sources. When not in use, dosimeters are stored on a rack in the control room. Dosimeters are changed out on a monthly basis and exposure is read from old dosimeters at that time.
