Many locations at CENPA are referred to by name instead of by number. These names are often derived from historical uses and can be confusing even to longtime CENPA personnel. The legend and floor plans will help with navigation.
See Contacts by Expertise for information on who to contact to learn more about each location.

Accelerator Building | Van de Graaff Building | This part of CENPA includes the tandem Van de Graaff accelerator and ion source, both Cave 1 and Cave 2, most of the high bay, the hot lab, the cold lab, and the office wing near the conference room. |
ATHENA room | NPL Data Center, Server Room | Room 170. This climate-controlled room houses the computing cluster (NPL Data Center). A previous iteration of the cluster was called ATHENA. |
Balance Room | Room 162A is a climate-controlled space used to make very precise mass balance measurements.
Cave 1 | Room 153. This space can receive beam from the accelerator. It presently houses the trapping setup for the He-6 experiment. Do not enter without observing the laser safety signs. There is some storage in the basement under Cave 1.
Cave 2 | Room 152. This space can receive beam from the accelerator. It presently houses the target for the He-6 experiment. There is some storage in the basement under Cave 2.
Chemistry Lab | Cold Lab, Target Lab | Room 166. This laboratory is located off the High Bay, next to the Hot Lab. It features a standard fume hood and an acid hood and is well suited to work with non-radioactive chemicals. Consult the safety officer, Doug Will, before use. |
Circle Room | Room 101. Now the main lab for the Eöt-Wash group, this was once the home of the cyclotron.
Cold Lab | Chemistry Lab, Target Lab | Room 166. This laboratory is located off the High Bay, next to the Hot Lab. It features a standard fume hood and an acid hood and is well suited to work with non-radioactive chemicals. Consult the safety officer, Doug Will, before use. |
Coffee Room | Lunchroom | Room 181. This room is located next to the main conference room. |
Conference room | Room 178. This room is located behind the mailboxes at the front entrance to CENPA.
Control Room | Room 159. This room is used to operate the accelerator and ion source.
Counting Room | Room 160, next to the Control Room. This room contains a great deal of DAQ equipment associated with the accelerator and ion source, as well as a Windows machine with a scanner and the CENPA poster printers.
Cyclotron Building | This part of CENPA includes the Circle room and the two-story office wing.
Darkroom | Room 123, in the two-story office wing of the Cyclotron Building. Once used to develop photographic negatives, it is now primarily storage.
Detector Lab | Room 161, next to the Hot Lab. This lab can be kept quiet and dark. It is presently used for laser optical tests of scintillator properties.
Electronics Shop | Room 175. This space is used for soldering, electronics tests, and other work. The main CENPA color printer is also located here. Some workbenches are available; consult David Peterson. Electronics stock is in the stockroom, Room 169.

High Bay | Setup Area | Room 163. This very large space abuts the Student shop and includes the loading doors, substantial storage, and numerous work benches. |
Hot Lab | Room 162. This laboratory is located off the High Bay, next to the Cold Lab. It features two standard fume hoods and is well suited to work with radioactive sources. Consult the safety officer, Doug Will, before use.
Lead Lab | Plating Lab | Room 165. This laboratory is located off the High Bay, next to the large IR laser cutter (CO2 laser). It features a large sink, a large fume hood and a laminar flow cabinet. It is also home to the large ultrasonic cleaners and the electron gun apparatus. |
Linac | The west end of the tunnel (Room 151) was once occupied by a 20-MV-equivalent superconducting linear accelerator (linac). The 9MV tandem Van de Graaff accelerator, which once fed the linac, is still in operation, but the linac has been decommissioned. Many pieces of the linac are still in place pending repurposing.
